The PC/IP programs use a DOS device driver that gets installed
automatically every time you bootload the PC (that is, every time
you turn the power on or press CTL-ALT-DEL.) But that
installation is automatic only if you have set things up in the
required way. If the following error message appears
when you type a PC/IP command:

Couldn't read in the custom structure, so you probably
         didn't install NETDEV.SYS correctly.

it means that when the PC was bootloaded the PC/IP device driver
did not get automatically installed.

Device Driver Installation Checklist:

1. Locate the system disk that you used when you powered up the
PC, or that was used when you last typed CTL-ALT-DEL.

2. Issue the command "DIR" for this disk. In the listing of the
root directory there should be a file named "CONFIG.SYS".

3. There should also be a file named "NETDEV.SYS" in the same
directory.

4. Issue the command "TYPE CONFIG.SYS" The displayed listing of
the contents of "CONFIG.SYS" should include the line

		DEVICE=NETDEV.SYS

5. NETDEV.SYS should have been customized by running the PC/IP
custom command. If NETDEV.SYS has been customized, its directory
timestamp will generally be different from the directory timestamps
of other PC/IP programs. If it has not been customized, it will
probably be the same.

If any of these checks turn up something that is not as
described, you should turn to the user's guide sections on
"installation" and "customization" and follow the instructions
found there.

Note that programs PC/custom, PC/offhook, PC/onhook, and PC/term
do not require that the PC/IP device driver be installed.
PC/custom, PC/offhook, and PC/onhook are not customizable, and
PC/term is customized with the DOS debugger rather than with
NETDEV.SYS.
