Using the   ***  O S B O R N E  1  ***   Micro-Processor

and the Osborne Comm-Pac System TeleProcessing Package.

" B. B. S."  TRANSACTION LOGGING and FILES / DATA TRANSFERS

   MODEM = Osborne Datacom: Bell 103a protocol

   SOFTWARE = AMCALL (Auto MicroCALL Communications Program)

**I I VER IMPORTAN THA YO REA TH `COMM-PACUSER' MANUAL.

DEFAULT CONFIGURATION for the modem (to start):

   Duplex Mode           ***  F U L L  ***

   Signal Rate           300 Baud

   Protocol              =====>   X-ON / X-OFF   <=====

   Uart Mode 8 bits, NO parity, 1 Stop bit

   Filename              b:day25dmp.fil   (OR, b:dumpone.fil)

   Screen Switch         ***  ON  ***

It is recommended that you use a modular plug and duplex modular
jack (splitter and cord) which will allow you to have access both
through your regular telephone unit to dial manually and through
the Comm-Pac to use the Auto-dial / Auto-answer facility. (See
Appendix III in the Comm-Pac User's Manual.)

It is also recommended that you start off each session with a
BLANK formatted diskette ready in disk drive "B". This is a
necessary requirement for extensive logging and/or DOWNLOADING of
file/s or text or documentation.

Followin th AMCAL manual' instructions se you configuration
as per the outline above, either dial manually or use Auto-dial,
to make connection with the BBS of your choice! NOTE: For some
of the BBS's it may be necessary to change your Uart Mode setting
to match that of the System with which you will be "talking"!
Once you make a connection, follow these instructions:

(msg:)--------> "Connection Established - Begin Communications"

(you type:)--->   <ESC> R   (press the ESC-key, then the R-key)
                                to begin the buffer logging.

(msg:)-------->   *** READY TO RECEIVE FILE ***

(then you:)---> <CR> hit the RETURN key.

(msg:)-------->   normal BBS sign-on/s, including user code/s,
                     password/s, etc., as may be required.

Having made your "receiving" file READY at the very beginning of
o you SIGN-ON yo ca no g ahea an us th BBS Whil
you carry out regular transactions, BUFFER MEMORY is being filled
continuously Ever s often a norma PAUS i th BBS
e.g.: at a Message Response Prompt!  (Buffer Memory = 14 k MAX!):

(you type:)--->   <ESC> W   (press the ESC-key, then the W-key).

(msg:)--------> *** READY TO CONTINUE FILE TRANSFER ***

(you type:)---> next System command (RESPONSE TO PROMPT).

B carefu plannin yo shoul hav bee abl t pla ou you
BBӠ session/s Therefore al o you regular norma BB
transactions - other than file or data transfers between the two
systems - could be completed FIRST!

AT THIS POINT, you may now want to UPLOAD or DOWNLOAD files and /
or data. To complete your logging phase, simply perform the fol-
lowing procedures:

(you type:)--->   <ESC> E   (press the ESC-key, then the E-key).

(msg:)-------->   *** END OF FILE ***

(msg:)-------->   *** FILE TRANSFER COMPLETED ***

This will finalize all your "transactions" logging. Because of
TIME LIMITS on some of the BBS's, you will want to carry out all
your work as quickly and as efficiently as possible!

To initiate the Osborne / Comm-Pac setup for file and / or data
transfers, use the following instructions:

(you type:)--->   <ESC> P   (press the ESC-key, then the P-key).

(msg:)--------> AMCALL request for modem configuration.

(you type:)---> `M' for MODEM protocol.

@@(then type:)>   <ESC> F   (press the ESC-key, then the F-key).

(you type:)--->   b:filename.typ     (e.g.:  b:osborne.doc)

%%(then type:)>   <ESC> ?   (press the ESC-key, then the ?-key).

%%(msg:)------> CURRENT configuration will be screened for you.
                  (chec ver carefull t ensur i is correct).

(then type:)-->   XMODEM S <filename>.<typ> <CR>   (you RECEIVE!)

                  XMODEM T <filename>.<typ> <CR>   (you SEND!)

NOTE: Depending on what kind of MODEM and / or teleprocessing
       software you may have, it may be necessary to use instruc-
       tions of a different format. Those listed above are all
       that is required when using the Comm-Pac and AMCALL.
