Using This CD-ROM

This CD-ROM contains marketing and technical publications supporting the IBM PowerPC family of embedded controllers, processors and development tools. In addition to product briefs and application notes, this CD-ROM includes chip data sheet manuals, users manuals, evaluation kit board manuals, and other tool documentation for developers of embedded systems. The navigation file peps.pdf and most publications are in PDF format so that you can access them using an AdobeTM AcrobatTM Reader. PostScript files of some publications are also included in directory [CD Drive]:/allfiles/ps_files) to allow hardcopy printing. HTML files are provided for PowerPC 604 SMP Technical Reference. To view the Technical Reference, use a web browser to open the file topics.htm, which contains the table of contents.

Using the CD-ROM on SunOS, Solaris, and AIX

On Solaris 2.3 and 2.4 workstations, the CD-ROM icon appears on the desktop if your CD-ROM drive is mounted. On other Solaris, SunOS, or AIX workstations, determine whether the CD-ROM drive is mounted.
	/etc/mount

You should see a list of mounted file systems. The CD-ROM drive is mounted on your local workstation if a line similar to the following appears in the list:

- If using SunOS or Solaris:
    /dev/sr0 on /cdrom

- If using AIX:
                 /dev/cd0   /cdrom cdrfs Oct 02 15:59 ro

If the CD-ROM drive is not listed as mounted, perform the following steps to do a logical mount on your workstation:
At the command prompt in a terminal window, type the command to become the root user and type the root password when prompted:

	su root            Password: <root_password>

Enter the command to create the /cdrom directory:

	mkdir /cdrom; chmod a+rwx /cdrom

Mount the CD-ROM drive. If using:

	- SunOS, enter /etc/mount -rt hsfs /dev/sr0 /cdrom

	- Solaris 2, enter /etc/mount -F hsfs -r /dev/sr0 /cdrom

	- AIX, first add the following lines to the file /etc/filesystems:

	/cdrom:

	dev	= /dev/cd0

	vfs	= cdrfs

	mount	= false

	options	= ro

	account	= false

and then type:

	/etc/mount/cdrom

In order to eject the CD-ROM from a workstation, you must first unmount it by invoking the umount command:

	/etc/umount

Installing Adobe Acrobat

This CD-ROM provides copies of Acrobat Reader for AIX, Solaris, SunOS, Mac, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

For the AIX, Solaris, and SunOS platforms, unzip the files and follow the procedures in the Acrobat Reader readme files to install the Reader files from the platform-specific subdirectories in the directory /acroread. IMPORTANT NOTE: THE ZIPPED FILES FOR AIX, SOLARIS, AND SUNOS MUST BE RENAMED SO THAT THE "z" IS UPPERCASE BEFORE YOU DECOMPRESS THEM.

 To run the installation program for these workstations, first check the exact name of the install program in the subdirectory under /acroread that applies to your platform. If a dot is appended to the install file name, type "install." (with the dot) to execute the install file.

Note: the Acrobat Reader for SunOS may not run properly unless a required software patch is loaded first. To get a copy of this patch, you can access the Sun patch site at "ftp://sunsolve.Sun.COM/pub/patches/patches.html". Then find "100444-76",download the patch and install it as directed.

**************

To install Acrobat Reader for Windows, run the self-extracting file d:\ACROREAD\WIN\ACROREAD.EXE (d: refers to the CD-ROM drive), as described in the readme files in d:\ACROREAD\WIN. Versions of Acrobat readers can be found on the Adobe WWW site at http://www.adobe.com

Using Acrobat Reader

Several features of Acrobat Reader make a softcopy document in PDF format easier to read and navigate than the same document as hardcopy. Cursors in Acrobat Reader allow you to touch document features (Hand), magnify a page image (Plus magnifier), or shrink a page image (Minus magnifier). The Hand cursor changes to a Pointing cursor when it crosses a screen area containing an active link. Open the View menu and select "Bookmarks and Page" so that, using the Pointing cursor, you can select individual chapters, sections, or topics within a book. Topics in the bookmarks window and in the table of contents for each publication are linked to the chapters, sections, functions, or commands within a book, so a single click on any active link will bring up whichever topic or section you select. Clicking the double-left arrow (<<) takes you back along the previous link. Large publications may contain multiple PDF files. Selecting links to other files opens additional Acrobat windows.

When you are finished with previous windows, close them promptly to avoid slowing system performance and using up system resources such as memory space.
