The underlying technology provides key user benefits. One is the high endurance limit already mentioned. Another key benefit is the superior routability, and therefore pin-locking, this technology allows.
Compared with EEPROM technology, the programming cell is 1/3 the area. The key benefit is that 3 times the number of routing switches in the same area. This allows fundamentally better routing, and superior pin-locking. This technology allows the XC9500 to incorporate more than 3 times more routing switches than any ISP CPLD.
The FastFLASH cell is substantially simpler than the EEPROM cell. This allows the potential for higher performance and easier process scalability. Because FastFLASH technology is compatible with industry standard flash memory technologies, FastFLASH technology will scale to 0.5 and 0.35 micron when the memory industry scales, which translates to continued cost improvements.
