Search Tips

SmartSearch uses Topic WebSearcher from Verity to help you find specific information quickly and easily.

Entering words and phrases separated by commas finds documents that contain any of the words specified. The more matched words in the document, the higher the result ranking. Stemmed words (plural form, etc.) are also included in the search.

If you are getting too many matches, try putting word or phrase in double quotes. This will force the search engine to match the string exactly as typed.

Next, try our special Industry-Wide SmartSearch and Xilinx-Only SmartSearch Forms. These forms contain lists of checkboxes which can be used alone or in conjunction with your entered query to constrain your search further by source or topic.

Finally, you can create your own advanced query using the language described below.

Advanced Search Language:

Boolean logic, wildcards, and zone searching allow you to compose refined queries :

Boolean Logic

AND - Finds only pages which contain both search terms.

  • Example: pci AND xc5000
  • Effect: Narrows search results
  • OR - Finds pages which contain any of the ORed search terms.

  • Example: pinout OR footprint
  • Effect: Expands search results
  • ACCRUE (smart OR, same as using commas (Search Tips)) - Finds pages which contain either search term.

  • Example: CLB,TBUF or (CLB,TBUF)
  • Effect: Expands search results. Like OR, but the more instances of words found, the higher the ranking of the document.
  • NOT (modifier)- Use with the AND operator to exclude terms from your search.

  • Example: linkswitch AND <NOT> press release
  • Effect: Narrows search results
  • Wildcards

    * - Matches any number of characters.

  • Example: XC31* (find all XC3100 device family references)
  • Effect: Expands search results by matching more words.
  • ? - Matches one character

  • Example: XC3?42* (find only XC3042 and XC3142 references)
  • Effect: Matches more strings, but limits wildcarding by character length.
  • Zone Searching

Zone searching permits you to limit your search by only searching in the titles or in the summary of documents.

  • Example: pci <in> title
  • Effect: Narrows search by only searching title or summary.
