Xilinx invented the FPGA in 1984 and has continued to introduce new products at a rapid pace, keeping up with customer demands for higher density, faster performance, and lower cost devices. Along the way Xilinx has pioneered new architectural features and technologies while maintaining industry-leading device performance and user flexibility.
All Xilinx FPGA products are pin- compatible, allowing easy design migration across density levels within a family and even across families. This "socket security" enhances time-to-market by enabling logic designers to layout their PCBs early in the design cycle and not worry about respins due to logic changes.
XC4000 - The Industry-Standard FPGA
The XC4000 series is the best selling programmable logic family in the industry and has become the defacto FPGA standard. Ranging from 3,000-to-62,000 Max. logic gates, the versatile and feature-rich XC4000 series pioneered the concept of on-chip user RAM in FPGAs.
The Select-RAM feature allows flexible, high-speed implementations of common memory functions including synchronous and dual-port RAM, FIFOs, and register stacks. With the density to address over 80% of all gate array design starts, XC4000 brings the flexibility and time-to-market benefits of FPGAs to almost all gate array designers.

Array Replacement
The XC5200 family is the lowest priced FPGA family in the industry and is ideal for designs not requiring on-chip RAM. Ranging from 3,000-to-23,000 gates, the XC5200 segmented interconnect structure gives it the smallest die size in the programmable logic industry. The volume pricing of this low-cost family make gate arrays up to 20,000 gates a thing of the past.
